This Weeks Picks 28/02/2006

Oops a day late - this does not bode well :)

Food of the Week - Happy Face biscuits. An old fave - but they just rule. The soft biscuit, the dollop of jam, the lovely creamy stuff! The only thing I cannot understand is that no-one has copied them....

Music of the Week - This week, after a discussion about the Arctic Monkeys, and their possibly over-hyped place in the long term music firmament, someone compared them to "The Smiths". So this led me to get one of the Best Of CD's. And guys - no contest!!! Every track on here is a winner in every way - musically and lyrically. And the sound is so unique, no-one has been able to copy it!

Comic of the Week - Not quite so far behind now - this weeks haul was quite small, so I was able to dig a little deeper than usual. I found about 8 issues of Runaways Season 2. This if you remember was the only long term hit from Marvel's Tsunami releases a couple of years back. The original series was basically a 12ish issue run telling the story of some kids of a hithertoo unknown super-villain team (The Pride). It was tangently set in the Marvel Universe, and by basing it in the West Coast, managed to avoid the usual guest star rotation. Apart from Cloak and Dagger (who had a themic link being Runaways originally). This set contained the wrap up of the original storyline, which was OK, and the East Coast/West Coast storyline which brings the kids to New York. I really enjoyed this - BKV is a great writer of his own material - and Molly decking Wolverine is moment of the year for me.

DVD of the Week - Seinfeld Season 5. Just finished this one - so season 6 next - but "The Opposite" - hurrah!

This Weeks Picks 20/02/2006

OK so here goes...

Food of the Week - Tesco Strawberry Fruit Fool. It really is fabulously fruity. And Creamy. I am addicted. The Lemon is not bad too - but Gooseberries just do nothing for me.

Music of the Week - Picaresque by the Decemberists. I picked this up because they put "This Sporting Life" on the post programme titles of Sky's Monday Night Football. And although that is a jaunty little number, The Mariner's revenge Song is the best 9 minutes I have heard for ages!!!!

Comic of the Week - I am rather behind on my comic reading. The pile just gets bigger. I am over a year behind on Fables now. And thats a comic I love. I am still hooked on the Essential - even though they are in Black and White, and give no foreward explaining some of the storylines (like the odd missing issue). Essential Marvel Two-in-One is the latest I have devoured. Yep, its the old Team-Up but starring the Thing. These issues are quite ropey - and some Fantastic Four continuity is left undiscussed (like when the Thing is human again using an exo-skeleton) - but this is good old fashioned Marvel 70's fun. Higly recommended - only so we get more volumes.

DVD of the Week - Seinfeld Season 5. I got the 5 and 6 box set and I am quickly reminding myself of how this was as good as it gets for this show. Not that any season was bad - just the sheer quality of each episode is stunning. Michael Richards is at the peak of his powers here as Kramer. "The Marine Biologist" is just perfect - Seinfeld in microcosm. In fact that might have been the first episode I ever saw. The DVD extras are the normal bunch of Bloopers/Inside Looks/Stand up, with the odd deleted scene (and the "Low Fat Yoghurt" actually gets both versions) which are the usual high standard. Notes about Nothing are also fun (as always) - the only downside is the Season specific documentary - a mini-clip show about George which seems a little wasted.

Film of the Week - I can do this because the DVd was a TV Show. And there is only one Winner. The Val Lewton Horor Collection. Wow - ignoring the standard classic "Cat People", the rest of this set is high class. This is horror done on a budget, with a dollop of film Noir. "I Walked With A Zombie", "Bedlam" and "The Body Snatcher" should be required viewing for any director. And who knew Bela Lugosi had such range. Hunt this one hunt film fans - I got it for less than £20

This Week I Have Been Mostly.....

I have not posted for ages. It's not that I have not had the time, but rather my ecelctic tastes have spread me too thin. Do I want to talk about Comics? Music? Movies? Am I tired of the constant spam I get in my comments? Do I get depressed that other blogs do it so much better than me?

So I am going to try - at least once a week to do a post covering a little of everything.
